Our friend Ken Takeda unexpectedly passed onto the next level recently and he is sorely missed. He was one of San Francisco’s original street skaters and ripped on a freestyle board and upon vertical terrain as well. Whether it was a skate barbecue at Fort Miley, our weekly Sunday afternoon freestyle and jump ramp gatherings in Golden Gate Park or heated sessions in Joe Lopes’ backyard or at the HP ramp, Ken’s all-terrain, light-footed, and stylish skateboarding always shined through. He was truly one of the SF Bay Area’s best on board. With his progressive and skilled abilities, Ken earned sponsorship through Alva skateboards and Venture trucks. And it was his sponsorship through Venture that landed him on the pages of Thrasher as the first skater to have a photo published skating The City’s renowned China Banks in 1985. Ken’s friendship, influence and calm personality throughout those formative years will forever be remembered. Wishing continued peace and respect to Ken and his family. Rest easy, Ken Takeda. —Bryce Kanights
